Book 1, Chapter 1:
It had always been there—a patient ember awaiting the spark. Skippii pressed his trembling hand to the earth and felt the whisper of a flame in his palm. Heat trickled into his lungs, glinting in his chest, coaxing the coals of an old, forgotten forge. Eyes shut, he searched the silence between each heartbeat, but there came no divine presence nor heavenly command. The Gods did not speak to the likes of him...
